petals mini quilt

i am a big fan of Orla Kiely patterns as you know so when i saw this block over at the sometimes crafter i immediately thought of Kielys stems - and loved the block!
so for some nights in a row i worked on this little mini: i choose four of my dearest and rarest fabrics, the Aviary prints from Alexander Henry. because it is long out of print i just possess small quantities of each of the wonderful bird prints and i wanted to use them on something special to showcase them a bit.

Ich bin ja ein großer Orla Kiely fan, und als ich diesen Block bei the sometimes crafter sah, dachte ich sofort an ihre Blätter-Drucke - und bin dem Block gleich ganz verfallen!
Daher hab ich nun ein paar Abende lang an diesem kleinen Miniquilt gearbeitet und einige meiner liebsten und seltensten Stoffschätze dafür angeschnitten, die Aviary Drucke von Alexander Henry. Da diese Reihe schon lang (?) vergriffen ist und ich nur ganz kleine Mengen jeweils von den Stoffen besitze, wollte ich immer mal etwas besonderes mit den tollen Vögeln machen, und sie angemessen herausstellen.

it always is kind of nerve-wracking, cutting into some irreplacable fabric, isn´t it? so i was a bit anxious doing it and sewing quarter circles was exciting, too :-) although i have a special 4" template from Elisa´s Backporch Design which really helps a lot. after cutting you just place your fabric together in a special way, without any pins, and start to sew. and this works out very fine, depending how much you pull your fabric pieces: just don´t, at least not too much, and everything is fine. Btw: to help feeding the very last part right through my machine i use tweezers.
to gain a little more security i marked the "half-point" of the frame and of the circle fabric pieces so i could see then if i was right on track.

In unersetzlichen Stoff zu schneiden ist immer ziemlich nervenaufreibend, nicht? Ich war also schon etwas bange, und auch das Viertelkreis-Nähen war natürlich aufregend. Aber ich hab eine spezielle 4" Schablone von Elisa´s Backporch Design dafür, die das Nähen wirklich einfacher macht. Nach dem Ausschneiden muss man beide Stoffteile auf eine bestimmte Art aufeinander legen, und dann ohne Stecknadeln einfach losnähen. Und das funktioniert auch sehr gut, je nachdem, ob man nicht zu sehr an den Stoffen zieht: das darf man nämlich nicht, oder zumindest nur ein klein wenig, und schon passt alles. Für den letzten Zipfel benutze ich übrigens eine Pinzette als Griffhilfe - alle, die schon mal solche Viertelkreise genäht haben, wissen, wie schnell das allerletzte Stückchen schief werden kann..
Und um noch etwas mehr Sicherheit zu haben, dass alles rund läuft, markiere ich mir immer auf beiden Stoffteilen den Mittelpunkt der Naht, dann sehe ich zur Halbzeit, ob alles passt.

The quilting is easy yet fitting i think: i just followed the outlines of the petals inside and out. The binding is another great Alexander Henry fabric: Heath in black, one of my real go-to fabrics right now.
So here i go, having a wonderful Alexander Henry mini for my sewing room wall!

Gequiltet hab ich den Mini ganz einfach, aber passend finde ich: einfach innen und außen den petals folgend. Das Binding ist aus einem weiteren tollen Alexander Henry Stoff: Heath, der schon zu einem meiner Standard-Stoffe geworden ist.
Und damit hab ich nun einen wunderschönen Alexander Henry Miniquilt für mein Nähzimmer!
